Downhill Racing Returns to Mt. Holiday!
Bring your bikes out to Mt. Holiday on Wednesday evenings. Leave the fear at home. We are bringing back the Downhill Race Series at Mt. Holiday for another year. Come out and race your friends down the grassy slopes and trails of Mt. Holiday. Most nights we set up some slalom style gates on the hill, making for some fun to watch mountain bike racing. Occasionally we race down one of the trails around Mt. Holiday. These are fun nights where you get to test your courage (and your brakes..). This race series is free to members of the Cherry Capital Cycling Club so come on out. You and your bike get to enjoy a relaxing chairlift ride to the top of the hill then take a fast and fun blast back down to the bottom. All bikes and skills are welcome.
The series starts Wednesday May 10th at 6pm. Racing will start at 7pm. We will race every Wednesday through June. Questions? Call Dan Packer at 620-8155.
Community Recreation Survey - North US31 Corridor
Since 1991, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy has protected and cared for the region’s natural, scenic, farm and forest lands and shoreline. Since 1998, TART Trails, Inc. has been dedicated to providing recreation and transportation opportunities as well as preserving open space corridors through a network of trails in the Grand Traverse region. The GTRLC and TART are now collaborating to gather public input as to how assets specifically located along the North US-31 Corridor can be best maintained and utilized by the public. GTRLC and TART need to know your awareness and use of recreational amenities in this region. This includes parks, non-motorized trails, beaches, natural areas etc. Your responses will help assure GTRLC’s and TART’s future plans are aligned with public desires for land use, non-motorized transportation and outdoor recreation. There are two short online surveys, one for individuals and another for businesses. For more background on the corridor and survey, check out this article from The Ticker.
Recycle-A-Bicycle Receives Grand Traverse Band 2% Award
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians awarded a grant for $6000 to Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails’ Recycle-A-Bicycle program as part of its recent 2% Award. The grant was one of 58 awarded to 100 applicants. Headed by founder and tireless volunteer coordinator, CCCC member Don Cunkle, the program provides economically disadvantaged individuals in the Grand Traverse region refurbished bicycles for transportation purposes. Since 2007, Don has collected, repaired and distributed more than 600 bicycles throughout the community. The funds from the 2% Award will be used for program operational costs including workshop space on Woodmere Avenue. The Recycle-A-Bicycle program continues to seek donated bicycles, usable bike parts, and monetary donations to meet the needs of the community.
